A scary blog post
So this is my first blog post for my new website, and I’m nervous about it! This is a brand-new business, and it feels like I’ve been changing my mind every day about who I wanted this new business to help.
I’ve got two autistic kids, so I wanted to do something to help parents of autistic kids. I’ve spent a lot of my career editing and proofreading kids’ books, especially picture books, so I wanted to focus on helping people write their books. I love playing around with Squarespace websites, so I wanted to teach others how to use it. I work with online courses every day in my day job, so I wanted to teach people how to write a good online course when they’re everywhere at the moment. I’m passionate about accessibility in the online space, so I wanted to teach people how to make their online content more accessible and inclusive. I’ve got your typical multipassionate ADHD brain.
Obviously I can’t do it all at once, but I had to start somewhere, so here we are. I plan to help women like me; maybe they have ADHD, but they have definitely struggled to organise their ideas and get their projects done. That’ll mean teaching you how I use ClickUp to organise everything, how to build your website without the confusion, or how to finally finish that book you’re stuck on.
I’ll probably also talk about autism, books for kids and adults, online learning and accessibility, but I’ll try not to stray too far from what I’m supposed to be doing!
I’ve had businesses in the past. I was a freelance editor for a long time, around 11 years, before I got burnt out and decided to go back to being a paid employee. I also started a business a couple of years ago, for children’s book authors, but within a year I realised that working with authors wasn’t going to work while I was also trying to juggle two neurodivergent kids, one with a chronic illness and disability, and a full-time job. Both times, my undiagnosed ADHD ended up making things much harder than they needed to be.
Now that I’ve got my diagnosis, I know what’s going to work and what’s not. That means no one-on-one offers (at least for now). I’ll be sticking with offering online courses, maybe some digital products, and we’ll see how things go.
So, there’s a few things to be nervous about, but I’ve launched the website so I can’t back out now! If my little corner of the web sounds like you, hopefully we’ll cross paths some time soon.
